For those looking for important long-term
influences on ingredient prices, the winter
wheat planting estimates just released
by the U.S. Department of Agriculture
represent a sobering development. At 36.6
million acres, winter wheat seedings for
harvest in 2016 were considerably smaller
than expected and are sharply down from
39.5 million acres in 2015 and 42.4 million
acres in 2014.
While the shift in U.S. crop acreage away
from wheat is hardly new, the downtrend
had appeared to be slowing in recent years
with perhaps some signs of stabilization.
The new figures go a long way toward
undercutting any hopes that a nadir had
been reached. Winter wheat acreage this
year is the smallest in over 100 years
(excepting the 2010 crop when plantings
were reduced by poor fall weather).
Plantings in Kansas, the largest producing
state, were forecast at 8,500,000 acres.
That's down 40% from the peak of
14,100,000 acres in 1982.
For flour buyers, the steep plantings
drop is especially disappointing coming on
the heels of what is a year of relief with
regard to ingredient pricing. For instance,
the white pan bread ingredient index
fell 18% in 2015 and pasta ingredients
(semolina) tumbled 47%. The acreage
report and subsequent wheat futures
rally underscored the fragility of what
had seemed to be an attractive ingredient
market as well as the need for vigilance in
