Guy A. Thomas, chairman
of the board of the Colorado
Milling & Elevator Co., who
had been associated with milling for 40 years and who was
one of the nation's wealthiest
millers, passed away March 9
in Minneapolis from a brain
tumor. Mr. Thomas had been
ill for some weeks. He was 71
years of age.
C.J. Patterson of Kansas City, a
nationally known figure in the
baking and milling industries,
and his associates have incorporated the C.J. Patterson Co.,
to engage in baking and milling service, bakery operations
and applied research.
Robert M. Hannegan, chairman of the Democratic national committee and postmaster
general, is reported to be
determined to influence abandonment of the 80% extraction
flour order before the important elections in November.

A scattered, quick survey
among bakers indicates that
the industry plans to use
regular wrappers in the merchandising of bread from 80%
flour, "saying little if anything about it at this time."
A campaign to reduce wheat
and wheat products consumption by 25% in addition to the
conservation measures already
adopted was inaugurated
March 1 at the White House following a meeting of the Famine
Emergency Committee.
Professor B. W. Dedrick,
nationally known operative
miller, teacher, scientist and
one of the founders of the Association of Operative Millers, died in State College, Pa.,
at the age of 85.
The production, packaging
and sale of "Swansdown"
flour were discontinued at
monthend, or just ahead of
the effective date of the 80%
extraction order. The brand is
produced by Igleheart Brothers, Inc., a subsidiary of General Foods Corp.
