Edible Oils

50 million bus from 1,890 million bus in
2016-17. Soybean oil production in 201718 was projected at 22,505 million lbs,
down 115 million lbs from the July outlook but up 560 million lbs from 2016-17.
Soybean oil usage in 2017-18 was forecast at 22,750 million lbs, unchanged from
July and up 750 million lbs from the forecast for the current year. Soybean oil use in
making biodiesel in 2017-18 was forecast at
6,450 million lbs, unchanged from July and
up 450 million lbs from 2016-17. Food, feed
and other industrial use of soybean oil in
2017-18 was forecast at 14,000 million lbs,
unchanged from July, up 400 million lbs
from the projection for 2016-17 and compared with 14,492 million lbs in 2015-16.
Palm oil prices followed soybean oil's
lead despite a larger-than-expected increase in Malaysian stocks, which were
estimated at 1.78 million tonnes at the
end of July, up 17% from a month earlier.
Tightening supplies and concerns
over 2017 crop production sustained a
7¼c premium to soybean oil futures for
refined canola oil in the Midwest.
Prospects for larger supplies ahead
once harvest begins pressured prices of
cottonseed oil and peanut oil. MBN

Bookings of edible oils and fats expanded last week. Prices were mostly
unchanged to weaker.
Soybean oil prices were edged lower.
Soybean oil futures only inched lower despite the hasty retreat seen in the rest of the
soy complex in the wake of an unexpectedly bearish U.S. Department of Agriculture
Crop Production report. The share of soybean oil in the value of the soybean crush
advanced to more than 36.5%. The cash basis on soybean oil weakened slightly.
Soybean oil users took advantage of
occasional dips in futures to book supply required to extend contract balances
to between 65 and 70 days. Basis coverage for the fourth quarter was 75%.
The U.S.D.A. on Aug. 10 forecast the
carryover of soybean oil on Oct. 1, 2018,
at 2,062 million lbs, down 230 million lbs
from the July projection but up 80 million lbs from a forecast 1,982 million lbs
in 2017. The adjustment from July resulted from a lower forecast 2017-18 soybean
crush, hence lower soybean oil outturn.
