Dollar sales of fresh bread held up better in the year ended Aug. 5, declining 1.6% to $6,107,159,000. The performance of private label during the years was in line with the overall bread market. Unit sales declined 4.9% from the H previous year while dollar sales were down 1.6%. Overall private label accounted for 27% of fresh bread dollar sales and 39% of unit volume. Each of the largest baking companies experienced a decline in unit volume sales over the past year. SymphonyIRI continues to list Bimbo Bakeries USA separately from Sara Lee Bakery even though B.B.U. acquired the North American fresh baking business of Sara Lee Corp. in late 2011. B.B.U. brands fared slightly better than the overall market, sustaining a 4.4% unit volume decline, while the company’s Sara Lee brands did worse, declining 5.7%. The steepest decline was sustained by Hostess Brands, Inc., down 9.6% in unit sales and 4.2% in dollar sales.
