Surging sales continued amid a whirl of one rumored acquisition and potential political intervention. Other beverage categories seemed to blur as The Starbucks Corp. entered the energy drink category and Trop50, a fruit juice brand, entered the tea category. Sugar reduction received focus in the juice and tea category. Global energy drink consumption increased 14% in 2011 to reach 4.8 billion liters, according to London-based Zenith International. Average growth volume from 2007-11 was 10% a year while value grew by 13% a year. Zenith International estimates the global market will soar another 35% to 6.5 billion liters by 2016. Monster Energy was second with a sales increase of 14% to $256.3 million. Published reports earlier this year focused on whether The Coca-Cola Co., Atlanta, might acquire Monster Beverage Corp., Corona, Calif. The Coca-Cola Co. on April 30 stated, “Coca-Cola has a distribution relationship with Monster in many markets, including the United States. Therefore, we are always in contact with Monster to maximize the value of our commercial arrangements.
