co-manufacturer of Flowers products for many years, and Mr. McMullian
said Flowers expects the acquisition to " drive further manufacturing and
distribution synergies. "
Also early in the year, Roundabout Catering acquired Franco
Baking Co., which has baked bread at a Sparks, Nev., facility for
more than 50 years. Franco Baking Co. services about 600 customer
accounts, including 134 Port of Sub locations as well as grocery
chains and other restaurants, in northern Nevada and Lake Tahoe.
Franco Baking Co. continues to operate under the same name and
continues to produce its existing products, including french bread,
sourdough bread, hamburger and hot dog buns, sandwich and dinner
rolls, and sliced bread.
In October 2022, Grupo Bimbo acquired St. Pierre Groupe, a United
Kingdom-based baker of premium brioche-style products with a growing
presence in the United States. The transaction was disclosed in Bimbo's
third-quarter financial results report. St. Pierre's products include
brioche buns, brioche bagels and brioche sub rolls. Specialty products
include chocolate chip brioche loaf, croissants, chocolate and hazelnut
rolled crepe, brioche waffles and brioche cinnamon twist. The company
said its business was inspired by the Parisian cafe culture with " a passion
for quality and a love of good brioche, pastries, crepes and waffles. "
The company's US sales at retail nearly quadrupled between 2018 and
2021 to $130 million from $34 million. It opened its first US office in
2021 in Cincinnati.
CHANGES COMING TO CEREAL
Dollar sales in the ready-to-eat (RTE) cereal category totaled $9.8
billion in the 52 weeks ended July 16, up 11% from the same period
a year ago, according to Circana. Unit sales, meanwhile, fell 3.5% to
2.29 billion units.
Private label and Kellogg Co. were the primary drivers of dollar sales
growth, with dollar sales of private label brands surging 18% in the
period to more than $612 million and dollar sales at Kellogg climbing
17% to more than $2.61 billion, according to Circana.
While Kellogg Co. prepares for its spinoff into two companies later
this year, innovation remained high on the company's list of objectives
during 2023. The company gave its Rice Krispies cereal a " fruity "
makeover with the launch of Kellogg's Rainbow Krispies. The cereal
features a " fresh, fruity flavor, splash of color " and is the company's
first fruity cereal to provide 20% daily value of vitamin D, according
to Kellogg.
Kellogg also explored new partnerships in 2023, joining forces
with The Icee Co., a subsidiary of J&J Snack Foods Corp., to launch
Kellogg's Icee Cereal. The cereal uses an innovative ingredient that
cools consumers' mouths as they eat, according to the companies. The
process, the companies claim, imitates " that familiar and refreshing
first sip of an Icee. "

sales of more than $3.1h billion, is playing a winning game against its
competitors, Jeffrey L. Harmening, chairman and chief executive officer
of the company, said during a June 7 presentation at the Deutsche Bank
dbAccess Global Consumer Conference in Paris.
In a conversation with research analyst Stephen Powers, Mr. Harmening
had a positive outlook on the company's cereal segment, specifically
citing the company's recent Minis cereal launches.
" Our new products have led the category, including the launch of
Minis cereals more recently, Reese's Puffs and Trix and Cinnamon Toast
Crunch Minis, but soon to become Lucky Charms Minis and Cocoa Puffs
Minis, " Mr. Harmening said. " And so that whole line has done really well.
Our innovation pipeline in cereal looks really good. "
