Natural Bakery Ltd. in Winnipeg, Man.
" This company is a one-bakery operation specializing
in the production and sales of rye bread,
strengthening our health and wellness portfolio, "
Mr. Servitje said, announcing the acquisition.
Natural Bakery was established in 1957 by
members of the Mikalauskas family, new immigrants
to Canada from Lithuania.
" Their recipes represented rye breads from
different regions of Europe, but they also wanted
a 'one-of-a-kind' style of rye bread that was inspired
by Canadian life and reflected the ethnic
diversity of Winnipeg, " according to Natural
Bakery. " Together, they came up with the original
Canadian rye bread that is still widely popular
throughout Western Canada today. "
Three months later, Bimbo announced acquiring
a business 500 miles south of Winnipeg
- National Choice Bakery, South St.
Paul, Minn. Founded in 1990 as Twin City Bagel
Inc. with a focus on providing the local trade
with fresh bagels on a daily basis, National
Choice Bakery manufactures European-style
bagels (water boiled, hearth baked) for the
retail and foodservice industries. The company
makes fresh, refrigerated, frozen and
thaw-and-sell bagels in a variety of sizes. The
transaction included National Choice Bakery's
66,000-square-foot kosher-certified production
plant in South St. Paul.
" The additional capacity gives our company the
opportunity to meet consumer demand and continue
to grow our breakfast portfolio, " BBU said.
BBU also bakes bagels under a variety
of
brands, including Sara Lee, Lender's and Thomas'.
Investment in sustainability remained a priority
for Grupo Bimbo over the past year. Most
recently, in August, Bimbo said it would double
its electric delivery vehicle fleet in Mexico to

Grupo Bimbo said the new vehicles, which are
powered by renewable electricity and are slowly
being incorporated into Grupo Bimbo's operation
in different Mexican cities, will stop the emission
of 6,600 tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent
into the atmosphere, which is equal to planting
and maintaining 250,000 trees.
Grupo Bimbo launched its first fleet of electric
vehicles, which were developed by Mexican engineers
who collaborated with Moldex, in 2013.
" Doubling our fleet of electric vehicles in
Mexico in one year reflects our commitment to
being sustainable by design and our conviction
to become a net-zero carbon emissions company
by 2050, " said Jorge Zarate, vice president of
global operations at Grupo Bimbo. " We know
that a sustainable future is built with today's
decisions. Grupo Bimbo Mexico demonstrates its
leadership by constantly investing in solutions to
face the challenges and having the largest fleet
of electric vehicles in Latin America. "
In June, Bimbo's subsidiary Canada Bread
Co., Ltd. was fined C$50 million ($38 million)
after pleading guilty for its role in an industrywide
bread price-fixing arrangement. The fine,
which was administered by the Ontario Superior
Court, is the highest price-fixing fine imposed by
a Canadian court.
Across nearly the entire period of the pricefixing
(2007 and 2010-11), Canada Bread was
under the ownership of Maple Leaf Foods. Grupo
Bimbo SAB de CV acquired Canada Bread Co.
from Maple Leaf in 2014. The senior leadership
of Canada Bread responsible for the price-fixing
is no longer with the company. CP
