amount of the vitamin. Cinnamon Toast Crunch
and Cheerios were the first cereals to feature the
vitamin boost, followed by Honey Nut Cheerios,
Lucky Charms, Cocoa Puffs, Trix and Cookie Crisp.
The full line of vitamin D-fortified cereals will be
available nationwide by the end of this year, according
to the company.
The cereal fortification is being promoted
as part of the company's recent Goodness We
Grow Up On campaign, which harkens back to
the company's 20-year-old commitment to keep
whole grains as the first ingredient of its cereals.
The vitamin D fortification follows the Food
and Drug Administration's approval earlier this
year to increase the amount of vitamin D added
in ready-to-eat cereals. According to data from
the National Health and Nutrition Examination
Survey (NHANES) cited by General Mills, 96%
of Americans aged two and older under-consume
the daily recommended amount of vitamin D.
In April, Fortune recognized General Mills as
one of its " America's Most Innovative Companies. "
In addition to some limited-time offerings
in its cereals portfolio General Mills expanded
its Nature Valley brand with the introduction of
Nature Valley Savory Nut Crunch Bars. According
to General Mills, the bars will be the first " savory
snack " offering under the Nature Valley brand
and will be available in three flavors: everything
bagel, white cheddar and smoky barbecue.
Citing a Wakefield Research Survey conducted
in April, General Mills said 63% of Americans
have a strong preference for savory or salty
snacks.
General Mills also said the bars use a proprietary
binding process that removes the need
for sugar binders to keep them intact. The 2020
Food and Health Survey found 74% of Americans
are seeking to reduce sugar intake in their
daily diets, General Mills said.
For the third time in four years and fourth
time in seven years, General Mills was forced to
recall certain varieties of Gold Medal flour due to
food safety concerns. This year's recall followed
the discovery of the potential presence of Salmonella
Infantis in 5-lb bags of the product. CP
