T
Zero becomes hero in soft drink category
op-selling brands in the soft drink category tend to have zero in
their names: Coca-Cola Zero Sugar, Pepsi Zero Sugar and Mtn Dew
Zero. One main reason: Consumers continue to seek drinks with
less sugar or no sugar at all. The International Food Information Council's
2024 Food & Health Survey found 76% of respondents said they were
trying to limit or avoid sugars, which was up from 72% in 2023.
London-based GlobalData identified sugar reduction claims such
as no sugar, low sugar or no added sugar as the most popular benefit
among non-alcoholic beverages launched over a 12-month period
ended in May. Low-calorie beverages gained 2.6 percentage points of
market share in the soft drinks market between 2014 and 2013. GlobalData
expects low-calorie volume share within carbonated beverages
to reach 16% in 2028, up from the current 13%.
" Finding sugar reduction solutions that offer an ideal balance between
great taste and healthier ingredients is key to new product development
in this space, " said Ashleigh Warnock, beverages managing consultant and
analyst at GlobalData. " The 'sweet spot' for sweetener development is a
product that matches the unique properties of sugar, a sweetener that can
work in soft drinks and food recipes, is 'perceived as natural,' is 'cheaper than
sugar' and is significantly lower in calories than the sugar being replaced. "
Unit case volume for Coca-Cola Zero Sugar increased 6% in CocaCola
Co.'s second quarter ended June 28, and zero-sugar varieties for
Pepsi and Mountain Dew performed well in the second quarter ended
June 15, according to PepsiCo, Inc.
Dr Pepper Zero is attracting young and multicultural consumers, said
Tim Cofer, chief executive officer of Keurig Dr Pepper, Inc.
" We've got a lot of head space of growth still on Dr Pepper Zero, " he
said Sept. 4 at the Barclays Global Consumer Staples Conference.
BOTTLED WATER GROWTH
Bottled water outsold carbonated soft drinks by volume for the eighth
year in a row in 2023, according to Beverage Marketing Corp., Wintersville,
Ohio. Total volume of 15.94 billion gallons in bottled water
compared to 11.84 billion gallons for carbonated soft drinks.
Transparency Market Research, Inc., Wilmington, Del., forecast the bottled
water market to have a compound annual growth rate of 6.2% from
2023 to 2031, reaching $460.8 billion. The industry is exploring ways to
minimize the environmental impact of plastic products such as increasing
product life and reusing and reducing single-use plastics, according to Transparency
Market Research.

conference call about the slowdown, Hilton Schlosberg, co-chief executive
officer of Monster Beverage Corp., said, " ... Historically, we've seen declines
in quarterly year-over-year volumes, really, only during the financial
crisis and COVID lockdowns in the US, and they particularly, significantly,
impacted foot traffic. The current situation in the US is actually relatively
unprecedented. "
