X-ray technology is touted for poultry and red meat
processing at the year's first international trade show

solutions were offered to address needs of
the red meat and poultry industries at the
annual expo that is no longer poultry specific and, for the second year, included the
participation of the American Meat Institute and its members.
Among its technology offerings at its
buzzing and hard-to-miss position on the
show floor, Stork Poultry Processing put
the spotlight on its SensorX SmartSort. Integrating the functions of both X-ray bone
detection and product grading in a limited
space, the system ensures proper product
routing based on predetermined weights,
while products found to contain bones
are re-routed. All of this occurs on the fly,
without the need for a separate weighing
station or a speed-up belt.
In addition to bone detection, "the Xray technology is able to weigh products and
only requires 1-2 cm. of separation between
those products," said Justin Astle, product
specialist with Marel.
"This is one of the most innovative
technologies we've had in the booth in
years," said Astle of the SensorX system.
"It's incredibly accurate," he said, "just as
accurate as a load cell." Traditional weighing using a load cell requires separation between pieces, which is not the case with the
SensorX. The SensorX 23 offers a 300 mm
scanning belt, suitable for most applications,
while the SensorX 25 is better suited for
higher throughput operations, with a 500
mm scanning width.
Weight-based grading is then achieved
using the SmartSort, a new component that
attaches to the end of the SensorX bonedetection equipment. SmartSort made its
industry debut at the IPPE, where the demo
system was equipped to sort 10 different
weight ranges using 10 different drops in
a very compact space. The modular system
is able to adapt to a wide variety of processors' needs. "This is a huge benefit when it
comes to floor space," said Astle.
