running the plant," he says. "Some people
don't like change, and some people are really
gung-ho about technology."
Asmaro will explain to processors the
benefits of robotics and automation, and how
an investment in the technology could make
sustainable sense for them in the long run.
For processors who don't know
much about the technology, it's
an eye-opening conversation
for them, Asmaro says. It can
also be intimidating. "But that's
where we come in and guide
them to improve the process
by introducing automation and
robotics," he adds.
Larger processors have
realized the benefits of robotics
and automation and see the return
on investment. But there are still
holdouts to the technology, mostly
smaller mom-and-pop processors.
"Some of them [small
processors] think the technology
is a big risk because it's a large
investment," Asmaro says. "They
have their minds set on doing
things the old-fashioned way."

FANUC develops robotics
primarily for the automotive
industry, but automotive robots
are often adapted to perform
in food environments, Asmaro
explains. FANUC currently offers
about 10 robotic models to the
food industry and is developing
more for plants with mid-range
production capacity.
Considering that fewer
families continue to make meals
from scratch in their homes and
are opting for more pre-packaged
prepared meals that can be
heated in the oven or microwave,
fast, efficient and safe food
packaging is only getting more
important for processors.

to get them there," Asmaro says.
