2025 goals,
and beyond
It's customary to start the New Year with a moment of reflection
with respect to the events and accomplishments of the past 12
months, followed by a moment of planning for the year ahead.
What have we achieved and where are we headed? Many of us
ask ourselves these questions every January and businesses and
industries - the pet food industry included - also use the New
Year as a time to reflect and set goals for the future.
The quest to become more sustainable has long been on the
pet food industry's to-do list, from ingredient sourcing to packaging
and all the processes in between, and in 2025, that quest
continues. Many corporations have set sustainability goals to
achieve in both the long and short term. Jorge Martínez, president
of Pet Nutrition for ADM, shared that ADM's goals include
reaching net-zero by 2050 and converting 25% of its total energy
usage to low-carbon sources by 2035. The company even has
sustainability goals it is striving to reach in 2025 - achieving
deforestation-free supply chains globally and engaging 5 million
regenerative agriculture acres globally, both to be accomplished
during this calendar year.
It seems that each and every year, sustainability is a top industry
goal. Bentonville, Ark.-based BSM Partners outlined
" Trends to Watch in 2025 " in a five-part episode of its Barking
Mad podcast, and sustainability was mentioned in almost every
episode. Among the top five trends the consulting firm outlined
in its podcast series, sustainable ingredient sourcing and
sustainable packaging topped the list. Alternative proteins in
pet food also made the cut, which we all can agree is another
sustainability initiative. It seems that almost all of the top trends
to watch in our industry involve sustainability in some manner.
Emilie Mesnier, vice president of European operations at BSM
Partners, explained to the podcast audience that being sustainable
means " considering the entire life cycle of a product. " You
can't just take into consideration the ingredients being sourced
for pet food, you must consider how
those ingredients are grown or raised, the
energy used to process those ingredients
into the end product and, of course, the
package that product ends up in.
With sustainability influencing all aspects
of the processing and production
cycle, each and every player in the pet
food processing industry should consider what they can do to
make their operations and products more sustainable, both in
2025, and in the years to come.
