TOPPAN purchases packaging
business from Sonoco
FDA SHARES NEW PATHWAY
FOR INGREDIENTS
Global packaging company TOPPAN Holdings Inc. has entered an
agreement with sustainable packaging
supplier
Sonoco Products
Company to acquire its Thermoformed & Flexible Packaging (TFP)
business for approximately $1.8 billion.
Sonoco's TFP is a sustainable, thermoformed and flexible packaging
business that serves a wide range of customers in pet and human food,
retail and medical industries. TFP provides a variety of complex packaging
to categories
including snacks,
healthcare,
fresh
products and pet
food, just to name
a few.
According to
TOPPAN Group,
this acquisition is highly complementary, combining the sales network,
customer base and solution development capabilities of Sonoco's business
with TOPPAN Group's technical expertise and manufacturing
capabilities.

Human, pet supplement company
acquired by private equity
Morgan Stanley Capital Partners (MSCP), the middle-market focused
private equity team at Morgan Stanley Investment Management, acquired
pet and human supplement provider FoodScience from Wind
Point Partners.With the transition in ownership, Sharon Rossi will continue
as FoodScience's chief executive officer.
" MSCP's investment serves as a further testament to FoodScience's
legacy and mission-driven culture, " Rossi commented. " We are excited
to partner with the MSCP team and look forward to leveraging their
network and expertise in the pet and animal health sector to accelerate
our growth both organically and through strategic acquisitions. "
Based in Williston, Vt., FoodScience formulates, manufactures,
markets and distributes nutritional supplements for pets and humans.
The company has an extensive portfolio of supplements through
VetriScience, DaVinci and Pet Naturals brands, as well as private label
and custom formulation offerings. This acquisition marks MSCP's third
investment in the pet nutrition sector, following the successful 2020
exits of Compana Pet Brands (formerly Manna Pro) and Thrive Pet
Healthcare (formerly known as Pathway Vet Alliance).
The American Feed Industry Association
(AFIA) expressed its support in the AFIC
process, sharing that it " marks a shift for
the regulation of animal food " and would
offer an alternative pathway for animal
food producers.
" With our members' input, we will continue
to advocate for a streamlined and
adaptable approach, allowing the industry
to innovate and bring safe, high-quality
ingredients to the market faster, " detailed
Constance Cullman, president and chief
executive officer of the AFIA. " This guidance
is a step forward, and we look forward
to supporting its effective implementation. "
The US Food & Drug Administration's
(FDA) Center for Veterinary Medicine
(CVM) finalized Guidance for Industry
(GFI) #294 on the interim process for
Animal Food Ingredient Consultations
(AFIC). Through the AFIC process, companies
will be able to consult with the FDA
on animal food ingredients to ensure the
safety of the ingredients.
This finalized GFI #294 will serve as an
interim process, allowing the agency to
conduct voluntary consultations with firms
and companies developing animal food
ingredients. Through the process, animal
food ingredient producers will be able to
submit data demonstrating the safety of
ingredients for the FDA's evaluation. This
will help ensure ingredient safety standards
are met before market entry and help companies
that would have originally utilized
the Association of American Feed Control
Officials' ingredient definition process.
