S TA T E O F T H E I N D U S T R Y R E P O R T Like most snack manufacturers, Mr. Carpenter also is concerned about increasing commodity costs and recessionary pressures in the economy. At Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., Charlotte, NC, consumers have an opportunity to go online and join the Snyder’s of Hanover Pretzel Eaters Club, and members are invited to tour the company’s pretzel bakery by calling and making reservations. The company’s new products include organic whole-wheat Pretzel Nibblers, made with USDA-certified organic ingredients. Each uniquely shaped pretzel contains 2 g fat and 120 Cal per serving, according to the company. Snyder’s-Lance’s Gluten-Free Pretzel Sticks respond to growing consumer interest in gluten-free products, and new Southern Style Barbecue Pretzel Pieces offer both great flavor and convenience. Other new products from Snyder’s-Lance include a Chocolate Pretzel Sandwich, Honey Wheat Braided Twists, Multigrain Braided Twists, Pumpernickel & Onion Braided Twists and Three Cheese Medley Nibblers. Utz Quality Foods, Hanover, PA, plans to launch a Seven Whole Grain Pretzel later this year. Other new pretzel products include Utz Select Pretzel Pieces, made with Utz sourdough hard pretzel pieces covered in three seasonings: Cheddar Cheese, Honey Mustard & Onion and Buttermilk Ranch. To meet the needs of moms who are looking for better-for-you snacks, Utz teamed up with Disney Consumer Products to become the first salty snack company to offer licensed products that feature pretzels shaped like Cars character Lightning McQueen. The items will be available in a flex bag, a barrel and a sack, the latter two containing individual serving-sized bags. They meet Disney’s nutritional guidelines to offer more healthful products and will become part of Utz’s Snacking Smart line, based on containing 100 Cal or less per serving, low fat, 0 g trans and saturated fat, and no cholesterol. According to SymphonyIRI’s SFA Panel Report covering all outlets in the US, pretzel dollar sales of $844.8 million for the 52 weeks ending Feb. 20, 2011, were up just under 1%, while unit sales were up 0.8% on a volume sales decline of 0.92%. — Bob Gatty SNACK CRACKERS The More Healthful Snack The cracker category showed some softness during the past year, with dollar, units and volume sales all declining in the 3% range. However, crackers with fillings bucked that trend nicely, showing significant gains. According to SymphonyIRI’s SFA Panel Report covering all outlets in the US, dollar, unit and volume sales of crackers with fillings increased by 3.1%, unit sales were up 2.9%, and volume showed a healthy 4.1% increase. Snyder’s-Lance, Inc., Charlotte, NC, is helping to move those numbers with the recent launch of its Cracker Creations, a premium, seasoned sandwich cracker with vegetables, cheese and herbs baked into the cracker. The product is available in two varieties: Garden Vegetable and Parmesan Herb. “Our research revealed that consumers are looking for a premium snacking option that will excite their taste buds while keeping them full between meals,” said Alvaro Trinidan, senior brand manager. “By baking the vegetables, cheese and herb flavors right into the cracker, Cracker Creations fills the gap for adults who want a sensible, fresh and all-natural snack.” Cracker Creations are made with no trans fat, preservatives or high-fructose corn syrup. That nutritional profile, of course, is in line with other Lance Sandwich Crackers, including its Whole Grain line, which offers 9 g whole grains per serving.
