began developing a blueprint for its future in 1975, this issue was at the top of the agenda. The committee’s labors were previewed in Atlanta at CHIPSPO ’76. In a fast-paced 19-minute slide presentation, the committee laid out its plan for expanding PCII membership from just producers of real potato chips and shoestring potatoes to those making a variety of snacks. The new name would be the Potato Chip/Snack Food Association (PC/SFA). Following a lengthy debate, the expansion proposal was approved, and effective immediately, 21 associate members that manufactured allied snacks became full business members, including such industry veterans as Rudolph Foods, Popped-Right, Evans Food Products, Keystone Snacks and McCleary Industries. July 1976 marked the first PC/SFA Quality Control Short Course, which drew 25 quality control experts from across the country. The consulting food technologist recently had completed an expanded Snack Food Quality Control Manual, which encompassed all member firms’ production processes. An all-new convention format, sold-out exhibit hall and information-packed program greeted snack manufacturers and suppliers at SNAXPO ’77, the first conference held by the PC/SFA. However, it also represented the group’s 40th anniversary. In 1978, PC/SFA left Ohio for new headquarters in the Washington, DC, area. As the decade came to a close, the problems that had plagued snack food makers during the past 10 years — high costs, increased government regulation and public concern with nutrition — continued. As PC/SFA looked ahead to a new decade, no one was quite sure where the chips or chippers would fall. sw Saying farewell to Four Industry Icons During the past several months, the snack food industry has mourned the passing of four icons of our industry. These men made major and important contributions that will stand the test of time. “These snack food industry leaders were instrumental in the growth of their companies and of the industry as a whole,” said SFA President and CEO Jim McCarthy. “Their leadership resulted in new and creative products and successful companies that continue to contribute to their community and the US economy. Our industry is strong and vibrant because of their dedication, commitment and hard work.” JAMES S. HERR James S. Herr, 87, founder and chairman of Herr Foods, Inc., died April 5. The 1979 SFA chairman was born in Lancaster, PA, and began his career in 1946 with the help of his then-fiancée and later-wife, Miriam, and a $1,750 investment in a small potato chip company. Under his guidance, Herr Foods, Inc. steadily grew, and by 1999, sales volume had expanded to more than $100 million a year, with some 1,100 employees, who produced and marketed 240 varieties of pretzels, chips and other snacks in a nine-state region. Today, Herr’s potato chips include flavors such as Baby Back Ribs, Cheddar Sour Cream, Ketchup and Original Crisp ’N Tasty. The company’s products can be found in most states and numerous foreign countries. While retaining his title of founder, Mr. Herr retired from his role as chairman of the board of Herr Foods, when his eldest son, J.M. Herr, assumed that role in 2005. Until his passing, Mr. Herr continued to serve on the board of directors. Mr. Herr and Miriam married in 1947. He is survived by his wife, two daughters, three sons, two brothers, a sister, 20 grandchildren and 18 greatgrandchildren. Active in his community and his church, Mount Vernon Mennonite, he provided leadership on numerous boards dedicated to evangelism, philanthropy and free enterprise. www.sfa.org August 2012 Snack World 17 http://www.sfa.org
