Letter from SFA Please Be Involved I McCARTHY f ever there were a time to be involved and actively participate and support the Snack Food Association (SFA), it is now. By the time you read this, SFA will have just held its 2012 Total Quality Management Course at The Ohio State University in Columbus, OH, as well as the new Snack Food HACCP/Food Safety Modernization Act Workshop, also at Ohio State, both of which provided outstanding content for those who attended. In just a few months, our nation will face a critically important election in which the Presidency and control of Congress will be at stake, and we all have an opportunity and responsibility to help determine the outcome. SFA is working hard in Washington to represent the industry’s interests, and inside this issue you will find an update on the latest developments— such as the 2012 farm bill — that affect our industry. These developments highlight the importance of SFA’s involvement in the government process. We are delighted our industry and SFA have continued to support other important initiatives with supplier partners such as potato varietal research. This is especially vital as we seek to continually develop the best possible products for our consumers while, at the same time, further reducing the incidence of acrylamide in our products. We also urge you to attend the Executive Leadership Forum, Sept. 23-25 at Kiawah Island, SC; the 2012 Management Development Program (The Snack School), Oct. 14-16 at St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia, PA; and, of course, SNAXPO 2013, March 16-19 in Tampa, FL. Finally, we want to pay tribute to four keystones of our industry who passed away in recent months: James S. Herr, founder and chairman of Herr Foods and SFA chairman in 1979; Joseph F. Welch, chairman of The Bachman Co. and SFA chairman in 1995; William A. Corriere Sr., co-founder and president of Keystone Food Products, Inc.; and Bob Prakken, founder and chairman of BluePrint Automation.
