Making a Difference
L
et me begin by saying I am both delighted and honored to serve as president of the SFA Associate
Executive Council (AEC), and I’m looking forward to an exciting and productive year working
with you.
As a 30-year veteran of the food industry and as representative of a major food company, I hope I can
bring additional knowledge and resources that will help move our association and the snack food
industry forward.
The AEC is the voice of SFA’s associate member community, and the association is extremely important
to us as we continue to seek ways to support our customers. The support of and involvement in the SFA is
critical for us as industry suppliers as we seek to cope with ongoing governmental legislative developments
and changing regulatory requirements.
However the association is only as strong as the involvement of all SFA members, including members
of the AEC; thus, I want to encourage my colleagues to strongly support the association’s efforts as
it represents our interests before lawmakers and regulators alike. Keep this in mind: Politics is NOT a
spectator sport.
In July, we have a real opportunity to show our support of our customers by attending and participating
in the SFA’s annual Legislative Summit in Washington. The summit will include face-to-face meetings with
legislators and key staff members in their offices on Capitol Hill. I have attended several of these events
over the years on behalf of Land O’Lakes Dairy Ingredients and have found the experience to be well worth
my time and energy.
There is no substitute for looking a lawmaker in the eye and telling him how their decisions in
Washington directly affect companies and constituents back in their home state or Congressional district.
It is obvious that legislators appreciate our taking the time to do this, and I believe it can make a difference
when the votes are counted.
This year, SFA is joining with the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) and Grocery Manufacturers
Association (GMA) for this event, to be held July 16-18 in Washington. Please see Page 9 for more
detailed information.
The next 12 -16 months are going to be pivotal for the future of this industry. We will be facing some
major challenges and opportunities – many of which are outlined in the State of the Industry report in
this issue of Snack World. Your participation will be critical if we expect a positive outcome.
