said Jamshid Ashourian, founder, chairman and CEO.
"We are committed to using all natural, fresh ingredients with our products being made from slices of real
potato using simple processes and fewer ingredients to
provide healthier alternative snacks for all consumers at
a reasonable cost."
Old Dutch Foods, Roseville, MN, rolled out Dutch
Gourmet Thick Cut Potato Chips in three flavors, Sea
Salt, Jalapeno and Cheddar, and Mozzarella. They are
indulgent flavors, but they meet all the criteria of a
premium better-for-you chip.
"The first rule for Dutch Gourmet is great taste,"
said Matt Colford, director of marketing and strategic
selling for North America. "All Dutch Gourmet products
are made with non-GMO oil, all-natural seasonings
with no artificial ingredients, and low sodium without
any taste tradeoff."
This spring Snyder's-Lance introduced Cape Cod
Infused Oil Kettle Cooked Potato Chips and Cape Cod
Thins. Using a new cooking method, Cape Cod is the first
to infuse oils with fresh herbs, spices and vegetables into
their kettle chips. Flavors include Mediterranean and
Fresh Jalapeno. Cape Cod Thins are available in Original,
Smokey Barbecue and Sea Salt Vinegar flavors.
"For flat chips, the Top Five flavors represent 93% of
the business, but the remaining 7% is where the excitement is and where producers can explore flavor trends
in other food groups," Ms. McGolrick said. "Salty snacks
like potato chips, tortillas and crisps can deliver these
trendy flavors in acceptable ways."
While salted, BBQ, and sour cream & onion comprise
a large piece of sales, consumers are excited by and continue to seek a diverse range of interesting flavors.
"This summer, we are particularly excited to introduce a line of summer-season potato chips including
Cheeseburger, Hot Dog and Corn on the Cob," Mr. Brick
said. "With cause marketing partner the United Service
Organization (USO), we look to excite consumers with
the spirit of the backyard BBQ and through customer
purchases create a donation to the USO to benefit military members and their families."
Wise Foods, Atlanta, wanted to launch a variety of
new flavors but didn't want to do a series of one-off

innovation items, so it decided to use the concept of
Wise Food Truck Favorites. Wise Food Truck flavors are
inspired by real-life food trucks and highlight actual
food trucks on the packages, said Jeremy Bjork, chief
marketing officer. "The most fun is watching consumers
try these products and hearing their reactions," he said.
In addition, Wise Foods introduced three flavors on
the reduced-fat kettle line: Bruschetta, Feta Cheese, and
Balsamic Vinegar & Sea Salt.
Old Dutch got in on the food flavor profiles and
launched a line of its Ripples potato chips, a subset
called Appetizers on the Go. The company noticed that
as the economy improved, consumers started going
back to restaurants, but instead of whole meals, they
were mixing and matching with appetizers.
"We saw a huge surge in appetizer orders as opposed to buying traditional meals, so we created a nice
platform to develop a flavor set mimicking the most
popular restaurant appetizers like bacon cheeseburger
sliders, onion blossoms, chicken artichoke and loaded
nachos," Mr. Colford said.
Snyder's Kettle Brand introduced on-trend items
inspired by foodie hot-items like its two new flavors,
Moscow Mule and Korean Barbeque.
"We are very aware of the broad spectrum of our
consumer base, but we take great care to ensure each
brand is delivering the taste and quality their core consumers want while exploring bold new flavor options
that appeal to Gen Z like we do in Kettle chips' new
flavors like Moscow Mule," Mr. Troni said. "Not only are
they on trend, but they are really good too."
Innovation in flavors has proved successful as Cape
Cod earned $231 million in sales with 10% growth in
2016, according to IRI. Potato chips are affordable, and
price is a factor for many consumers with less disposable income. They are served as appetizers, side dishes
or snacks, and they, like most snacks, are conveniently
available in small, single-serve packages that are portable and versatile for any occasion.
Whether it's a traditional flavor or an adventurous
one, a better-for-you option or a savory indulgence,
potato chips continue to reign king in the snack world
thanks to their versatility.
