STATE OF THE INDUSTRY
At SNAXPO 2017, Jared Koerten, senior food analyst,
Euromonitor International, reported that while veggie
chips are just a $2 billion market across the globe, it is
growing at about 11% per year.
"There is tremendous innovation in chips outside
those strictly made from potatoes. It has become a
free-for-all, especially with lentil or vegetable chips," Mr.
Vierhile said. "There are other products mixed in here
that are based on vegetables, like Frito-Lay's Sun Chips
Veggie Harvest, and lentils or beans included in Simply
Tostitos Black Bean Chips."
Transparent ingredient lists are important to
customers, and 79% agree it's important to recognize
the ingredients in snacks, according to Mintel's Salty
Snacks, US, April 2016 Executive Summary. Nearly
two-thirds of consumers believe snacks have too many
artificial ingredients.
" 'Processed' is becoming the most salient marker for
unhealthy foods, and it is represented by long ingredient lists as well as unpronounceable ingredients," said
Robertson Allen, PhD, consultant/food anthropologist,
The Hartman Group.
These snack alternatives are revitalizing the US snack
market and are favored by all generations because of
perceived nutritional benefits, according to the Packaged Facts report.
