Mixing It Up...
C
areful observers might recognize something familiar about the graphic on the cover of this issue of SNAC
World. It draws on a new design element we launched in September along with our updated website and
membership brochure: a bowl of colorful "snacks" along with the tagline "Mixing it Up and moving forward. We're bringing together classic, healthy and traditional snack brands to foster big ideas to cultivate an even
stronger industry."
We view this as the next step in helping stakeholders, from current and prospective member companies to key
influencers, understand the association's new name and the depth of our commitment and bring it to life every day.
This is not an "all sizzle, no steak" undertaking. The rebranding will only succeed if it is an authentic portrayal of
the services SNAC International offers to its members. With completion of the very successful business-focused
Executive Leadership Forum, headlined by John Mackey, CEO of Whole Foods; a new commitment by the board
of directors to establish an advanced learning track for Emerging Leaders; and an entirely new Technical Education program for 2018, we are concentrating on offering new programs and services to cultivate an even stronger
industry. Most exciting is the board's decision to revamp SNAXPO by tightening up the schedule, investing in topnotch speakers and rebranding and marketing the show to appeal to the traditional and innovative incubator snack
companies.
As we move these new initiatives forward, we will not lose our focus on SNAC's core Advocacy pillar. Our top priority in 2017 has been to harmonize FDA's new Nutrition Facts and Serving Size regulation with the pending USDA
Biotechnology Disclosure requirement. We are making progress with FDA's proposal to extend the compliance date
18 months, from June 2018 to January 2020, but there is more work to do. USDA must complete its rule on time to
have a meaningful window of opportunity for companies to revise labels once to meet both requirements. And FDA
needs to finalize its guidance to industry on how to properly calculate added sugars and fiber.
We have a lot on our plate as we look to end 2017 in strong position and deliver on the value we have promised
for 2018.
