made with whole ffood ingredients, the refrigerated lunch
continues to grow by leaps and bounds.
'lunchables' are growing in popularity because they

marketing, CCD Innovation.
Snack producers are leveraging the appeal of the graband-go convenience by elevating the level of freshness, quality of ingredients and variety of flavors and options available
for these snacks.
Products with snack tray pairings eaten as a mini-meal are
popular, and are playing with fresh combinations, noted Tom
Vierhile, vice-president of strategic insights, North America,
Innova Market Insights.
Plymouth, WI-based Sargento's Balanced Breaks' and
Sweet Balanced Breaks' dollar sales grew 11.8% and
14.4%, respectively, over the past year, according to IRI.
Tyson's Hillshire Snacking, Springdale, AR, which offers a line
of small plate snacks, sustained strong growth at 20.6%.
Portable adult snack trays are being upgraded and feature
more premium foods such as prosciutto and aged mozzarella. Chicago-based Quaker's Morning Go Kits include
breakfast biscuits, yogurt and trail mix. Minneapolis-based
Crystal Farms' Ready Egg Go Hard Boiled Egg with Almonds
& White Cheddar Cheese provides a nutritious mini-meal
packaged in a convenient tray.
Oscar Mayer, Madison, WI, responded to the appeal for
all-natural, clean ingredients with its Natural Meat & Cheese
Plates. It satisfies multiple snacking needs and meal replacements. Consumers can choose from four options with varying meats and cheeses served with whole wheat crackers.
The portable snack plates pack 17 g protein and are free
from artificial preservatives.
Oscar Mayer's Lunchables, which were the inspiration for
the adult version of the snack trays, cater primarily to kids.
The line remains popular posting sales at $1.1 billion, according to IRI.
Change may be forthcoming for kid snacks, however.
FreshDirect's 2019 Top 10 Trends forecasts an evolution,
including the impact of nutritional innovation on kid favorites
and the creation of adult snacks with more child-friendly
flavors and cleaner nutrition. These trends are relevant for
refrigerated lunch trays and snack plates, and producers
would do well to note this shift for kid snacks, which could
create white space for this category.
