Indulgence remains a key driver in the salty snack market,

strikes a nearly perfect balance as an indulgent and healthy
snack.

"Popcorn is a permissible indulgence, and it is an old
favorite among snackers because it keeps you munching,"
said Kara Nielsen, director, Food and Drink, WGSN, a global
trend forecasting company.
For popcorn, flavor innovation and its appeal as a healthier
alternative has fueled growth in recent years. The category
increased dollar sales by 6.7% for the 52 weeks ending June
14, 2020, according to IRI's quarterly report of retail sales for
snacks.
"Year after year, customers choose Popcornopolis for
everyday indulgences and that became even more evident
during the COVID-19 crisis," said Phil Fox, executive chef,
Popcornopolis, Vernon, Calif. "Popcorn is a unique snack
often tied to happy memories, so in these uncertain times,
consumers have turned to our brand for comfort."
This year, Popcornopolis developed natural and organic
products including its Organic Grocery line, which combines
convenience with nutrition-conscious snacking. The company has incorporated trending functional ingredients like turmeric and herbal extracts in its popular Golden Turmeric and
Vanilla Sea Salt popcorns.
"As we think flavor-forward, we believe that consumers will
continue to demand products that are ultimately satisfying
but also contain ingredients perceived to be inherently beneficial to their health and lifestyle," Mr. Fox said.
Plano, Texas-based Frito-Lay's Smartfood popcorn brand
added a lower-calorie version called Smart50. The popcorn
has 50 or fewer calories per cup and is made from 100%
whole grain popcorn with no artificial ingredients.
It's no surprise that Frito-Lay's Smartfood popcorn and
Derry Township, Pa.-based Hershey's SkinnyPop brand
posted the highest dollar sales, as these better-for-you
lines are positioned for wellness. However, more indulgent
