products like Chicago-based Conagra Brands Crunch-nMunch, and Popcornopolis products overall, actually experienced more growth, 12.3% and 28.5% respectively.
"Flavor profiles have evolved to include popular trends
like hot and spicy, herbs and botanicals, and more niche
global flavors," Mr. Fox said. "From our research and
testing, we've found that emerging flavors for popcorn will
continue to be traditional savory seasonings, like butter
and cheese."
Frito-Lay's Cheetos Popcorn takes the snack into a
new category. The popcorn is seasoned with Cheetos
"Cheetle," the iconic cheesy dust seasoning, and it
comes in two flavors, Cheddar and Flamin' Hot. This
product marks the first timepopcorn has been infused
with Cheetle.
Marketing snacks to break up the day while working
from home creates new snack occasions. Innovation
with more sophisticated snacking profiles may appeal
to grown-ups who want something special for cocktail
hours, intimate celebrations or late-night treats.
Consumer desire for variety and escape will drive
popcorn innovation. However, due to ongoing uncertainty and economic concerns, consumers are more
influenced by price and value for their food dollars. As a
result, producers may focus development on more innovations with merchandising and packaging. To adjust to
the changing landscape, Popcornopolis is working on
new packaging for the retail marketplace, as well as offering a wide variety of flavors and ways to shop online.
"Top-selling core snacking categories will continue
to be in vogue with consumers, but we will see a shift
in their rank position," said Sally Lyons Wyatt, executive vice president and practice leader, client insights,
IRI. "Popcorn is among those categories that have and
will continue to see growth. It is a favorite snack for
watching television."
