During the past two years, consumers turned to
various coping mechanisms to deal with the stresses
of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, and
snack foods were certainly one of those. Data from
Mintel suggested better-for-you snacks were already
on the uptick before the pandemic, but these
current consumer trends have helped strengthen
the market further.
" With new variants emerging and stay-at-home
trends lingering, consumers are shifting their pandemic
routines from short- to long-term, " said Anna
Fabbri, US flavor and ingredient trends analyst with
Mintel. " Many are refocusing on their health and
wellness as they settle into their 'next normal' and
are seeking foods to fuel this lifestyle. "
SIZING UP THE MARKET
Overall, the market for fortified and functional packaged
food in the US reached $31.5 billion in 2021
and is forecast to grow to $33.2 billion by 2026,
according to Euromonitor International.
A 2021 flavor survey from Innova Market Insights
found 39% of US consumers cited health as the
most important aspect of snacking across occasions.
Protein claims on these products have
become especially popular and grew 35% in 2021,
according to Innova. Additionally, a 2021 trends
survey found two in five US consumers became
more adventurous with their food and beverage
choices during the pandemic, and this sense of
adventure in flavor can include international tastes
as well as savory snacks with chocolate or caramel.
Ms. Fabbri said functional snacks are especially
popular with parents of children under 18 as 58%
of moms are seeking products with more functional
benefits. She said parents are often frequent snackers
and look for convenient options that deliver
benefits such as satiation, immunity and gut health.
ADVENTURE THROUGH INGREDIENTS
Ms. Fabbri said alternative ingredients like cassava
are increasing in popularity and driving the market.
According to Mintel's Global New Products
Database, cassava and other root-based snack
launches grew 164% from 2017 to 2021. As a root
typically used in African and Latin American foods,
