The Other Salted Snack category
competes on both sides of the
spectrum: health and comfort.
The Other Salted Snack category reaps the
rewards of both an increased urge to snack as
well as this category's ability to straddle the line
of healthy and comforting snacks. The category
saw a 16% sales increase in the 52 weeks ending
Dec. 26, 2021, as well as a 3.9% increase in
unit sales. That growth came from many brands
that represent many different trends.
All Frito-Lay products remain the highest earners
with a whopping $2,373 million in sales. The next
closest brand is SunChips bringing in $319 million.
On top of its massive sales number, Frito-Lay's
portfolio experienced a 22.6% increase in dollar
sales and a 5.2% unit sales increase. This reflects
consumers continued interest in snapping up those
brands they're most familiar with as they continue
to comfort eat. Doritos and Cheetos, likewise, saw
a 16.1% increase in dollar sales, but a 0.5% decline
in unit sales, indicating that these products'
gains may have been due to more increasing prices
as the snack manufacturer dealt with rising input
costs.
It isn't all comfort snacking, however. Brands with
a healthy halo also performed exceptionally in 2021
with Sensible Portions Garden Veggie Straws experiencing
22.1% growth in dollar sales and 16.3%
growth in unit sales. Pirate's Booty saw 25.1%
growth in dollar sales and 15.9% growth in unit
sales. These alternative snack brands positioning
themselves as healthier alternatives even outperformed
private label varieties.
Overall, this category offers snack producers
the opportunity to really push the boundaries with
their existing brands, whether through new flavors,
crossover opportunities or new formats through
new extrusion capabilities. It's only limited by the
snack manufacturers imagination.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
On the comfort side of the spectrum, Other Salted
Snacks benefit from nostalgic flavors and crossover branding
opportunities.
Brands banking on the healthy halo are upping the
ante with more nutritious base ingredients and even more
streamlined ingredient lists.
Other Salted Snacks positioning themselves as healthier
are incorporating more flavorful varieties to better compete
against their conventional counterparts.
Established brands are finding opportunities with new
snack formats in the Other Salted Snack space.
