Apple Chips bring farm-to-table to a whole new level.

Apples are red, berries are blue, bananas are sweet,
and they are all good to eat. That's certainly the case
with Apple Chips, which have seen sales soar 28.5%,
albeit from a small base. These gluten-free, vegan,
portable, on-the-go and often non-GMO snacks push
about every button for health-conscious consumers.
Most of these clean label products are baked, dehydrated,
fried, dried or freeze-dried.
Bare Snacks, which PepsiCo purchased in 2018,
owns a commanding share of the Apple Chips category.
In addition to Washington State apples, the
baked-not-fried fruit chips line includes snacks made
from bananas, coconut and a variety of other fruit and
vegetables. As the brand indicates, Bare Snacks are
undressed with their signature flavors coming from the
caramelization of the fruit in their ovens.
Seneca Apple Chips holds the No. 2 spot with its
Washington apples cooked in mono-unsaturated
fats that come in their all-natural glory or dressed in
Cinnamon or Caramel. Greenetown Foods dehydrated
apple chips tout their Pure Michigan roots and feature
Original, Cinnamon and Jalapeño varieties while Wall
Brothers Orchards offers freeze dried apple slices from
Utah. In the broader category for fruit snacks, Rind
Snacks turns unpeeled fruit into dried snacks.
Overall, IRI classifies Apple Chips as part of the
broader Other Snacks category, which saw sales
rise 8.8% to $1.38 billion. Also included in the Other
Snacks group are Trail Mixes, Chocolate Covered
Salted Snacks and Carob/Yogurt Coated Snacks.
When it comes Apple Chips, it seems like consumers
are following the one-time slogan of another famous
technological Apple. Think Differently!

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
Snackable apple, banana and other fruit chips can be
found in all eating occasions. They often serve as ingredients or
components in salads, charcuterie boards, ice cream sundaes
and muffins, to name a few. For entertaining, recipes include
favorites like pineapple/apple chip cheese balls or sweet apple
chip nachos.
The $1.38 billion Other Snacks category includes several
segments, such as fruit- and nut-filled Nutritional Snacks/Trail
Mixes, which saw sales rise 6.1% to $1.03 billion, according
to IRI data. Chocolate Covered Salted snacks jumped 21.6%
to $227.6 million while Carob/Yogurt Coated Snacks increased
9.7% to $112.4 million.
