Apple Chips grew but far behind its 2021 pace.

Things were sweet for Apple Chips in 2021,
with dollar sales blossoming 28.5%. The category
soured a bit in 2022, however, as sales
increased only 2.8%.
This dropoff was due in part to the struggles of
category leader Bare Snacks, which saw dollar
(-5.4%) and unit (-6.7%) sales fall for the 52 weeks
ending Jan. 8, following significant increases for
both in 2021 (56.4% and 54.2%, respectively).
The category did achieve a slight bump in unit
sales of 1.4%, however, following a decline of 7.8%
the previous year. Other top brands like Seneca
and Greenetown Foods found room to grow in both
units and dollars, albeit not at their 2021 rates.
Seneca offers seven apple chip flavors and
debuted a Pink Lady variety last year, donating
a portion of the sweet-tart chips' sales to the
National Breast Cancer Foundation during October.
Greentowne Foods' dehydrated apple chips come
in Original, Cinnamon and Jalapeño flavors, capitalizing
on the growing spicy snack trend.
The category saw a few fresh faces as well. Trail
mix maker Gourmet Nut entered the space with its
Simple Slices brand in mid-2021, quickly becoming
the fourth largest in the category. The chips are
available in Red Apple, Honey Crisp and Cinnamon
Red Apple varieties.

Jack's
Perhaps the most eye-catching jump came from
Jack's apple chips, with dollar sales soaring 64.8%
following a rough 2021 (-47.5%).
While Apple Chip brands are still finding success,
especially among health-conscious buyers with
their gluten-free, vegan and all-natural attributes,
the category's faltering momentum may demonstrate
consumers prioritizing indulgence and comfort
when it comes to their snacks.
