Snack/Trail Mixes hold steady with major
growth from health-driven brands.

The Snack/Trail Mix category held steady this
year with a 1.5% increase in dollar sales and
1.9% decrease in unit sales. Private label dominates
the nearly $1.2 billion category with $778.4
million of the pie, and these products reflected
the overall category with a 1.7% increase in dollar
sales and 1.5% increase in unit sales. Staple
brands in the category like Kar's and Planters
experienced flat sales or modest growth. Kar's
had a 9.5% increase in dollar sales but an 8.7%
decrease in unit sales, while Planters experienced
just over 4% growth in both dollar and unit sales.
While the overall category might be largely
flat, other players are experiencing considerable
growth. Second Nature has broken out in the
category with its trail mixes, boasting functional
benefits. The brand experienced 17.3% and 16%
increases in dollar and unit sales, respectively.
The brand's trail mixes include lines such as
Wholesome Mixes and Chocolate Mixes, but its
latest Smart Mixes focus on delivering on a keto
claim, omega-3 fatty acids and antioxidants. By
relying on buzzwords and trendy diets, Second
Nature taps into the nutrition focus that drives the
category. Another brand that experienced significant
double-digit growth is Power Up by Gourmet
Nut, another trail mix positioning itself with protein,
omega-3 and antioxidant blends.
Other brands, however, took a hit, which had a
tempering affect on the category overall. Sahale
Snacks, with its glazed nut mixes, experienced
an 8.8% decrease in dollar sales and 18.5% loss
in unit sales. Southern Style Nuts at $16.2 million
tumbled double digits with a 15.4% decline in

 Snack/Trail Mix brands that found growth focused on
functional nutrition for the buzziest health trends.
 The overall Snack/Trail Mix category was relatively flat
thanks to major gains and losses by individual brands.
 Private label dominates the Snack/Trail Mix landscape
and held steady last year in a segment marked by higher
prices than other salty snacks.
