Pretzels of all types contribute to the category's performance.

Pretzels hit the trifecta in 2023. Like the thoroughbred
that it is, the category experienced
positive growth in sales (8.7%), number of units
(2.2%) and volume or " pounds sold " (0.7%).
That's down to earth from 2022, when pretzels
were off to the races with dollar sales jumping
17.5% and unit sales rising 2.3%, but it's still a
solid performance when compared with many
other snack categories.
Three main trends are driving pretzels' steady
run. First, private label sales soared more than
20%, reflecting how much more consumers
are watching their budgets, searching for value
or trading down because of rising food prices.
Despite these economic forces, premium brands
like Dot's Homestyle Pretzels experienced double-digit
gains, indicating many consumers are
willing to pay slightly more for upscale products
they know and love.
Moreover, in the health and wellness segment,
brands like Quinn resonate in a category where
snacks are naturally baked not fried. Specifically,
Quinn is emerging as best of breed in the betterfor-you
segment with plant-based, gluten- and
dairy-free Pizzeria-style Pretzel Nuggets and other
pretzels that are Non-GMO Project verified or have
earned the Whole Grain Stamp.
Snack producers are also betting on flavor
innovation. Frito-Lay North America now offers
Cheetos Pretzels Cheddar and Flamin' Hot varieties.
The nation's largest snack company once
again carried over the iconic flavor from one of its
brands into another category. In this case, it did
so by covering one side of the pretzel in Cheetle
dust while the other remains a pretzel. Frito-Lay
pointed out that this idea came from research
that showed 63% of Cheetos consumers purchase
pretzels, while flavored varieties drive 58%

 Pretzel Pete introduced Topzels in Salted Caramel
and Cinnamon Brown Sugar to the toppings segment,
expanding opportunities for pretzels as a component in
other meals and food.
 Utz's Cajun-inspired Zapp's pretzel line has won
several awards for its New Orleans-style Sinfully
Seasoned Voodoo and Jazzy Honey Mustard varieties.
 Pennsylvania is the home state for 80% of the
nation's pretzel production. Moreover, the state claims
Pennsylvanians are responsible for most of the consumption
of pretzels.
 Internationally, Israel-based Meir Bagel announced
it plans to bring new high-protein, low-carb Crisp Power
pretzel snacks to Amazon this year.
