COOKIE CRAZE
The classics reign supreme, but new flavors
and formats are driving excitement.

When it comes to snacking needs, few check as
many boxes for consumers as cookies. They're a
moment to indulge, an on-the-go snack, an affordable
treat and more.
" Cookies are a part of the fabric of people's
lives, " said Lynn Dornblaser, director of innovation
and insight, Mintel. " They are an everyday product,
a special treat and everything in between. They
may be, in many cases, considered a
'permissible indulgence' as packaged
cookies, especially, are smaller in size
and can be easily portioned out. "
The affordable, convenient indulgence
cookies offer make them a
persistent snacking powerhouse.
Sales for the category rose 6.4% to
$11.7 billion for the 52 weeks ending
Jan. 28, while unit sales dipped
1.9%. Nabisco led the way with $3.9
billion in sales, followed by private
label ($2.4 billion), Little Debbie
($840 million) and Pepperidge Farm
($583 million).
Classics like chocolate chip, chocolate and
vanilla continue to dominate, but often with an
elevated twist, such as Pepperidge Farm's new
Newport cookies (Dark Chocolate with Sea Salt).
Citrus flavors are also emerging, with the company
introducing its Ojai (Lemon Sugar) variety.
Other innovative cookie offerings have been
introduced as well. Pillsbury and General Mills,
for example, recently partnered to introduce softbaked
cookies in Cinnamon Toast Crunch and
Lucky Charms flavors.
Limited-time offerings (LTOs) and seasonal
holidays offer another opportunity for flavor experimentation.
Cheryl's Cookies has seen great
success with its unique seasonal flavors, including
Pumpkin, Cinnamon Sugar, S'mores and Hot
Chocolate.
Creative cookie formats are also piquing the
interest of consumers and generating buzz for
the category. Subway, for example, introduced
its Footlong Cookies to menus nationwide in
January and saw " unprecedented demand " for
the item in its first two weeks, resulting in a shortage
of the cookie.
Indulgent offerings lead cookie category
growth, outpacing better-for-you, permissible
CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
 Elevated takes on familiar favorites are finding
success, such as Tate's Bake Shop's Salted Caramel
Chocolate Chip variety.
 While they trail behind traditional offerings, betterfor-you
cookies with claims like low sugar and high protein
are resonating with more consumers.
 LTOs and holidays are prime opportunities for flavor
experimentation.
 The affordable, permissible indulgence offered by
cookies make them a hit among consumers.
