New products make an impact in driving sales,
but the classics still dominated.
Consumers like their corn snacks, and innovation
is one of the reasons why. Bugles and
Cinnamon Toast Crunch recently teamed up
for a distinctive mashup, for example, while
Unique Snacks continues to push Puffzels, a
gluten-free, pretzel-shaped puff snack available
in four flavors, including Aged Cheddar, Home
Style, Honey Mustard and Wild
Buffalo.

said Sally Lyons Wyatt, executive
vice president and practice leader,
client insights, Circana.
She's right. According to Circana,
the Corn Snacks category increased
a whopping 19.5% in dollar sales and
10.5% in unit sales for the 52 weeks
ending Jan. 28. The category also
saw a significant 7.6% rise in volume
sales.
Innovation may be providing the
category with a boost, but nothing
comes close to dislodging the classics from atop

their perch. Frito-Lay's Fritos crunched the competition
with more than $1 billion in sales, which is
almost $700 million more than its closest competitor.
That competitor just happens to be Chester's,
another Frito-Lay brand that made inroads with an
impressive 62.3% increase in dollar sales to secure
the second spot overall. Cheetos also saw a 23.2%
increase in dollar sales.
There are a handful of newcomers to the category,
including Tom's Snacks and Churrumais, a maker
of flavored fried corn strips.

CATEGORY INNOVATIONS
Private label saw a 54.7% increase in dollar sales
and a 26.9% rise in unit sales. Volume sales were also
up 23.4%.
Unique Snacks' Puffzels will be available in 1.8-oz
bags this year.
Flavors are expanding as Old El Paso introduced
Queso, Zesty Ranch and Cinnamon Churro corn snacks.
