Brands owners remain cautiously optimistic despite
the category's continued struggles.

The Pork Rind category's difficulties in 2022
continued into last year. Dollar sales (down
5.5%), unit sales (down 10.2%) and volume
sales (down 10.3%) all tumbled for the 52 weeks
ending Jan. 28, according to Circana. In fact,
11 of the category's top 15 brands saw double-digit
drops in dollar sales, including Brim's
(-12.1%), Dot's Homestyle Snacks (-17.9%),
Epic (-25.4%), Mac's (-10.9%), Southern Recipe
(-11.1%), Turkey Creek (-11.9%) and Utz
(-26.1%).
" Mostly, we've seen the effect of fewer snack
dollars in the system in terms of mass retailers and
conventional grocery stores, particularly in urban
areas where retailers are dependent on more snack
dollars to contribute to their revenue in their stores, "
said Mark Singleton, vice president of sales and
marketing, Rudolph Foods.
There were some bright spots. Mission and
Guerrero both saw an increase in dollar and unit
sales, while Mambi saw a double-digit increase in
dollar sales (10.3%).
Despite the struggles, Singleton remains positive.
" Optimism is my middle name, so I think the
category will continue to do great because it fulfills
a vital part of consumers' dietary routine, " he said.
" People are eating several times a day, particularly
high-protein and low-carb snacks. We think the
future is very bright as we develop household penetration
and trial. We're going to get people to eat
more pork rinds in more places. "
