In the largest single ﬂour sale
transaction in the history of world
ﬂour milling, the government of
Egypt agreed to buy at least 1 million tonnes of ﬂour from U.S. mills
for shipment beginning March 1
and continuing for the next 12 to 14
months. Under terms of the milliontonne sale, Egypt agreed to come
to the U.S. for any additional ﬂour
needs before buying from any other
origin. Thus, in one fell swoop, U.S.
mills became the sole supplier of
wheat ﬂour to Egypt, the world’s
largest importer.
The European Commission reacted to the U.S. ﬂour sale to Egypt
by announcing plans to ﬁle a complaint under the General Agreement
on Tariffs and Trade (GATT). The
Commission also plans to seek prevention of further escalation of the
conﬂict in trade by either side in
discussions at meetings with U.S.
ofﬁcials that had been arranged by
Secretary of State George P. Shultz
in an effort to avoid a trade war.
Agricultural investment in the
U.S.S.R. this year will amount to
47 billion rubles ($63 billion), according to Nikolai Baibakov, head
of Gosplan, the Soviet Union’s economic planning body. For the second year running, Gosplan’s formal
report omitted an estimate of the
grain crop size. Baibakov told the
Soviet Union’s legislators that crop
production was disappointing but
he did not reveal the actual ﬁgure.

Purina Company, St. Louis, has

become president of the American
Association of Cereal Chemists. He
succeeds John Watson, of Watson
Foods, Woodside, New York. David
Lineback, of North Carolina State
University, Raleigh, has become
president-elect.

Associated British Foods PLC
(ABF) has reached an agreement,
subject to approval from the U.K.
Ofﬁce of Fair Trading, to sell part
of its Allied Mills business to ADM
Milling Limited, a wholly owned
subsidiary of Archer Daniels Midland (ADM). Under this agreement, Allinson Queens Mill, Castleford; Chancelot Mill; Edinburgh;
Healings Flour Mill, Twekesbury;
Kings Mill, Knottingley; Seaforth Flour Mill, Liverpool; The
Sovereign Flour Mill, Corby; and
the ofﬁces at
Brentwoods will
transfer to ADM.
Mark Fairweather, who will report directly to
George Weston,
will lead the reWeston
maining Allied
Mills business. Weston will become chief executive of the combined Allied Bakeries and Allied
Mills businesses.

SAIPOL, a company specializing in vegetable oil production,
has erected a new factory at Grand

Couronne, near Rouen, France.
The production unit has a crushing capacity of 1,200 tonnes per
day (rapeseed, sunﬂower seed and
soybeans). Privé S.A. of ChalonsSur-Marne, France, provided three,
2,000-cubic-meter metal storage
bins for the project. Each bin has a
diameter of 12.5 meters and stands
16 meters high. The roof of each
bin has an enclosed gantry covering
the conveyor and walkway to protect equipment from bad weather.
The silos were built on concrete
slabs 2.7 meters above ground in
order to allow space for unloading
equipment. Each silo is emptied by
gravity. Residual emptying is made
with a sweep auger.
Richard Hahn has been named
head of the Department of Grain
Science and Industry at Kansas
State University. Hahn has been
head of the KSU-based Kansas
Value Added Center since 1989.
His responsibilities have included
organizing new state efforts to
stimulate agricultural processing
and serving as a liaison between

Adrian Measner has been selected
as the Canadian Wheat Board’s new
president and chief executive ofﬁcer
(CEO). Measner has replaced Greg
Arason, the CWB’s president and
CEO since 1998, who retired Dec.
31. The CWB president and CEO
serves on the 15-member board of
directors and is responsible for leading management in implementing
an innovative and comprehensive
international marketing strategy. On
behalf of the board, the president and
CEO is responsible for the day-today management of the corporation
and for ensuring the boards strategic
plan is implemented.
