to 17 tonnes of pelleted feed per hour.
Brian Williams, vice-president of business development
and marketing for Bühler, said the Kubex T is primarily targeted to poultry integrators that run at high capacity.
"The revolutionary aspect of the Kubex is the drive system,"
said Williams, who noted that the Kubex is the most successful
launch of a pellet mill in the company's 150-year history. "It
has a true direct drive system based on motor technology that
is developed to produce torque rather than speed, and torque is
really what you need for pelleting.
"With a conventional motor-driven pellet mills you always
have to transmit that from 1,800 rpms down to whatever speed
you want in the die, which is much slower, so that means you
have to have a gear box or some transmission driven by a
pinion gear or belts or something. When you do that you lose
energy in that transmission. This is directly coupled to the motor. It is a variable speed motor so you can change die speed
Another company displaying feed production equipment at
the event was CPM. Scott Anderson, sales manager for CPM,
said the industry continues to demand higher production capacity, which is why the company was showcasing its new 50-inch
die pellet mill at IPPE.
"It's a response to customer demand for getting more production out of a given facility," Anderson said. "That's the
most consistent challenge we're seeing; they want to get
more throughput in facilities."
He said being part of the IPPE expo pays great dividends
for CPM.
"It's an incredibly important event, and it's getting more
important every year as we're attracting more of an international audience," he said. "We have people from at least eight
different countries representing us in this booth."
AFIA EDUCATIONAL SESSIONS
The American Feed Industry Association (AFIA) hosted a
half-day meeting on "Exporting Feed and Feed Ingredients to
the U.S." at the IPPE. The conference provided attendees the
opportunity to hear from key industry professionals discussing the complex process of exporting feed and feed ingredients to the U.S.
"How animal food is regulated in the U.S. can be complicated to those who are not used to our federal and state-based regulations," said Leah Wilkinson, AFIA director of ingredients, pet
food and state affairs. "Knowing the players, different methods
of regulation and the ingredient approval processes is key to
successfully exporting feed products to the U.S."
Gilbert Lee, vice-president of business development for
China-based Tanke International, said he learned valuable
information at the seminar and believes the U.S. is a market
that his company, which manufacturers natural and organic
