Careers
Well Spent

Thaddeus Stevens College
congratulates Jim Hamrick and
Steve Hower on their retirement
after years of committed service.

P

rofessor Jim Hamrick will be retiring after 33 years at Thaddeus Stevens
College of Technology in the Architectural Technology program. He
is currently the longest serving faculty member, and this will be his final
year after three years leading the faculty in to commencement as the mace
bearer as well as constructing elaborate over-the-top balloon hats worn
the past fifteen years at commencement by a designated Architectural
Technology grad.
Jim's strong desire to broaden students' world view, experiences, and their
cultural awareness led to 16 tours with students to Frank Lloyd Wright's
famous Fallingwater in Mill Run, Pennsylvania, twenty spring field trips to the
architectural mecca of Columbus, Indiana, and leading ten courses abroad to
Italy, Greece, Spain, and Central Europe.

S

teve Hower announced his retirement this spring after 30 years at
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology as an instructor in the Metals
Fabrication & Welding program. Steve has had a long history with the
program, attending it himself between 1978-80. After time in the field he
returned as an instructor. Steve has witnessed going from 15 students
in the program to 90 students after moving to the Greiner Advanced
Manufacturing Center on Chesapeake Street in 2019. The program added
34 welding/work stations with 78 machines, and equipment capable of
fabricating metals from 24-guage sheet metal to 1-inch thick plate in carbon
steel, stainless steel and aluminum alloys. Also, overhead bridge crane,
rigging and fork lift certifications were added.

Technology Instructor, 1992

When asked what Steve will miss the most he responded, The people:
students, colleagues, staff, directors and administration (too many to name),
all working toward a common goal and tracking, nudging and sometimes
pushing students to the finish line. Lesson to all: if you treat this as just a job,
it will be just a job. If you have a desire to leave it better than you found it,
retiring will be one of the hardest things you ever do. "
