The Tower Summer 2018 - 8

The
Director's Corner
I

extend a sincere summer welcome to
all our alumni and friends of Thaddeus
Stevens College of Technology. The other
day I received mty renewal passport. There
was a statement in the booklet that resonated
deeply in my thinking as being relational to
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology.
The statement boldly said "With your U.S.
passport, the world is yours!"

We Need Your Help
For the continuation of our on-site
training of the trades, it's critical for
the Thaddeus Stevens Foundation to
acquire more building lots for new
home construction.
If you have knowledge of any such
land being available, please call the
Foundation office at 717-295-9666.
Your supporting interest would be
most appreciated. Thank you!

8 The Tower

What a powerful statement of motivation and
encouragement to a young person getting
ready to enter the global workforce. On May
12th our graduates proudly walked across the
stage in ceremonial order to receive their
Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology
diploma that they so deservingly earned. We
can justifiably say as well "With your Stevens
College diploma in hand, the world is yours!"
In the fall of 1957 I was accepted to attend
Thaddeus Stevens with a personal qualifying
status known as meeting the criteria which was
a school for the poor and the downtrodden.
Today, 61 years later, we long since alleviated
that qualification to be renamed as under
resourced students. This is certainly more
socially acceptable and reflects greater
definitive employable majors to all the young
men and women of the Commonwealth of PA.
Little did I know or ever anticipate that the
instructional time and training I received at
Stevens was the crossroads of my life. Stevens
gave me everything in preparation - beginning
with a remarkable education, excellent and
priceless trade training that has carried me
to some of the most incredible experiences
in construction, and many more friendships
than one could ever ask for, which I'll defer to
in a later publication of the Director's Corner.

Above all, Stevens prepared me with the skills
and education to provide my family with a
sustainable and enjoyable lifestyle.
Under the outstanding administrative
leadership of President Griscom, committed
faculty and supporting staff, Stevens College
has seen immeasurable growth starting
with our main Lancaster campus. Three
blocks away we have the Stevens on Orange
facility which houses over 200 students and
numerous technical laboratories. Then we
go to Greenfield Corporate Center where we
lease about 45,000 square feet of a very large
facility for technical training. Very shortly
we will be moving down to the new Greiner
Campus facility on South Broad Street. I
take the personal liberty to say the Greiner
Campus will house the finest technology
center in Pennsylvania featuring advanced
manufacturing with the latest and best state of
the art machinery in every laboratory. There's
no question that the students of interest will
be standing in long lines to get accepted in
these majors.
I've always thought attending TSCT was
a privilege, not an entitlement. I read that
having privilege isn't about deliberately
demanding something - it's just about the
circumstances of your life that give you
benefits you never asked for. Sometimes a
source of wealth influences a privilege to a
certain class of people and not to all.
I look to our benefactor, Thaddeus Stevens,
as creating the greatest description of
privilege of all in establishing a school for
the "poor and downtrodden". Even though
my expression of privilege might differ from
Webster's 180 degrees, I'm proud that I and
