The Tower Summer 2021 - 10
Framing Futures 2021
In January 2021, BB&T (now Truist) granted funds to Thaddeus Stevens College to create
a Pathways to Success summer camp. The camp was developed as " Framing Futures "
and held on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College.
P
athways to Success is a " foot in the door " introduction
to a technical education at Thaddeus Stevens so that
more Lancaster citizens will have an opportunity to get
good jobs in the construction industry and other highdemand
fields.
The Framing Futures Camp was formed in collaboration
with Lancaster County high schools, the Lancaster
Workforce Board/ CareerLink and Habitat for Humanity.
Thaddeus Stevens strives for equitable admission of
qualified students. Yet, every year too many underresourced
Lancaster County students fail to meet TSCT
admission standards. Thaddeus Stevens College created a
new pathway to success for Lancaster County high school
seniors typically not admitted into the College.
Eleven participants gained new academic and technical
skills and a vision for what it takes to have a living-wage
career. These trained young adults will become selfsufficient.
They will enrich our economy as they rent
apartments, buy cars and houses, and live the American
Dream. They will become leaders in their communities
and thereby improve their families and Lancaster County's
economic vitality for years to come.
During their senior year of high school, these students
worked through Lancaster County Workforce Board's
10 The Tower
Ready2Work/Work Keys to Bronze level certification.
Ready2Work teaches essential academic skills and
workplace-readiness skills, including appearance,
attendance, attitude, communication, planning and
organizing, critical thinking, interpersonal/social skills,
teamwork, time management and professionalism.
Beginning July 6 - Aug 6 2021 the students received
applied academic remediation and credentialed training,
including safety and hands-on projects in forklift, carpentry,
plumbing and electrical, in addition, they completed the
construction of two maintenance free well-built sheds.
They celebrated success at a completion ceremony and
were awarded a toolbelt filled with a set of new tools.
The completers earned a Thaddeus Stevens non-credit
certificate and an offer of admission into the College's PreMajor
program for fall 2021, which puts them on a pathway
to earn a future Associate of Applied Science degree in a
major of their choice. This could be their ticket to a free
Associate Degree education. If qualified, they can receive
the Stevens Grant, covering tuition, tools, books, room and
board.
The students who choose not to apply to TSCT still have
earned employer-recognized credentials and are more
employable than before entering the program.
