State Utilities Look to
Stevens to Fill Pipeline
Chair of Public Utilities Commission visits to
highlight the need for utility workers

haddeus Stevens sophomore Laura Perry enrolled in the Water
& Environmental Technology program because she thought
utilities could offer her a good job and an opportunity to serve her
community.
"I knew I wanted to do something to help the environment, but I
wanted to also find a career where I can be for the next 40 years,"
she says.
Utility employers and policymakers from across Pennsylvania
are trying to convince more young people to think like Laura.
Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission (PUC) Chairman Gladys
M. Brown and leaders from utilities from across the state in February
visited Thaddeus Stevens to highlight the importance and impact of
educating the next generation of utility workers.
"Pennsylvania's utilities represent tens-of-thousands of family
supporting and community-oriented jobs, with growth and training
opportunities, good wages, and the satisfaction of knowing that
you are serving your local communities," Brown said during a press
conference. "These are systems and people we depend upon to keep
our communities safe and healthy."
The PUC hopes to encourage talented individuals of all ages and
backgrounds to consider careers in the utility sector, which has a
strong and growing demand for a new generation of employees.
Brown noted a combination of factors-including an aging
current workforce as well as the need to support new systems and
technologies-that are driving worker shortages across the country.
The event helped to shine a spotlight on the College's annual
career fair, at which hundreds of employers with thousands of
openings recruit Stevens graduates. The PUC chose Stevens for its
