On a Level Plane BY JUDITH SHINSATO SITEWORK CONTRACTORS: Whether it’s preparing a site for roadwork, utility installation or vertical structures, sitework contractors ensure that the ground upon which future construction will be built is stable and able to support what’s on top. How are these vital members of the industry coping? Are they seeing increased activity? How have they kept busy and what will sustain them in the coming year? We poll Hawaii’s foremost site preparation experts to get their view of the horizon. At Grade Much like the work they are trying to accomplish when preparing a site for paving or a concrete slab, most sitework contractors are predicting growth in 2012 to remain relatively flat. “Sitework will remain the same as last year,” says Rodney Nohara of Jayar Construction, Inc. “With the economy still not turning for the better, I don’t foresee any increase in activity for our industry. Our volume for 2012 will be probably the same as last year.” Commenting on what may change this outlook, Nohara adds, “With this being an election year, we may see more federal money being appropriated during the latter part of the year.” Underscoring Nohara’s remarks, Ben Prock, Kiewit Infrastructure West Co. Hawaii area manager, states, “The state of the industry shows somewhat stagnant progress as far as construction projects are concerned.
