Farewell to Old Friends
I knew very little about construction when I first started writing for Building Industry magazine, and it is only through the patience and reliability of the many industry leaders who were willing to chat with me that this has changed, somewhat. At this time I’d like to recognize and thank two recently retired gentlemen who were especially helpful to Building Industry magazine’s entire editorial department: Allan Lock of Hawaiian Dredging Construction Co., Inc. and Denny Watts of Watts Constructors, LLC. Both of them were dependable ck Allan Lo and frank sources of information whenever the need arose. Although we will miss their insight, we do wish them well in Denny W atts their future endeavors.

Next Generation
This calls to mind a concern voiced by Ray Skelton of Goodfellow Bros. during an interview about the need to attract new workers to the construction industry in the near future. “There have been a lot of people who have left the construction world during this recession,” he says, “and many of those people will not come back. Once we get going and growing again, we’re going to have a hard time finding people.” Add the increasing number of industry people who will be retiring and the problem takes on larger significance. From where will the next generation of construction workers come? An obvious answer is to focus on the youth, to whom construction does not hold the same allure as programming games/applications for digital media or designing glamorous fashions for A-list celebrities. Many also do not realize just how vast and varied the industry is. Several organizations, admirably, are already doing their part, but is there more that we can do? What is your company doing to ensure there will be enough workers in the future? Any suggestions? We’d love to hear from you. Aloha,
