SPOTLIGHT ON SUCCESS P-822 MARINE CORPS AIR STATION Fire Rescue Goes High Tech S panning 20 acres on the Marine Corps Base Hawaii in Kaneohe, the P-822 Marine Corps Air Station is fully operational. The NAVFAC award, valued at more than $46.6 million as a design-build project by dck-ecc pacific guam, LLC, consisted of three projects: the Aircraft Fire Rescue Station, the Terminal Operations Complex and Cargo Facility and the Airfield Parking Apron. "This project has been a true example of the spirit and dedication required to successfully undertake and complete a project of this complexity," says Stephen D'Angelo, CEO and president of dck worldwide. "Our team has dedicated itself to providing our client with a first class, state-of-the-art facility through countless hours of design 16 | BUILDING INDUSTRY HAWAII | MARCH 2015 vision, ingenuity and sheer hard work." The Aircraft Fire Rescue Station is a state-of-the-art firefighting facility with five apparatus bays, each with powder-coated aluminum overhead doors, to house fire rescue vehicles and equipment. Atop the AFRS is an elevated 360-degree control and dispatch tower. "This station is a 24/7 facility, thus it is also equipped with full living quarters for 12 occupants, complete with top-tier kitchen and all other residential accouterments," says Project Director Bradford Hall. "It also contains an administration and management sector." The structure is built of thick CIP walls with hollow core decks and roof structure. The interior finishes consist of metal stud framing and gypsum board. Floors consist of durable resilient flooring, sealed concrete and carpet. The station was designed and constructed with a state-of-the-art Firefighter Alert System (FFAS). "The benefits are two-fold: to expedite response time and to secure the safety of the facility when the firefighters depart for an emergency call," Hall says. "To expedite response times immediately following the alarm, the FFAS activates lights and alarms throughout the facility to notify personnel of the alarm, the truck exhaust system activates to ventilate the facility as the truck engines are started and the apparatus bay doors open automatically to allow quick egress for the vehicles.
