High-Touch Communicator An Interview with Rick Hobson of Gentry Homes BY DAVID PUTNAM R PHOTO BY GREG YAMAMOTO 40 | BUILDING INDUSTRY HAWAII | MARCH 2015 ichard "Rick" Hobson penned the theme "One Connection, One Voice, One BIAHawaii" for his installation as 2015 president of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii. "We are all connected here in Hawaii, and what I do or don't do could affect others. So it is important to let others know what the BIA-Hawaii is doing by talking about it," says Hobson, vice president of sales and marketing at Gentry Homes Ltd. "Meeting personally with community leaders, future homeowners, lawmakers, business owners and, most importantly, our dues-paying members is the only way. What I call 'hand to hand' communication-this high-touch approach has been the cornerstone of my new sales and marketing career and will serve the BIA-Hawaii well during my term. Of course, our website is cutting-edge and constantly improving. "But there is nothing that replaces getting out, pressing palms, breaking bread and connecting to another person. I hope this will be my legacy for BIA-Hawaii." Hobson says he "grew up on the beaches of Southern California surfing, diving, sailing and fishing, and so Hawaii was perfect for me and family." He joined Gentry Homes more than 18 years ago following a successful real estate career in California. The 1985 UCLA alumnus-and an avid outrigger canoe racer in the Islands since 1998-shares his thoughts with Building Industry Hawaii on affordable housing and other issues, as well as what drives him to succeed and what he does just for fun.
