EVENTS
April (all month)
The AIA Honolulu Architecture Month was created to encourage a public
dialogue about architecture and showcase the positive role architects play in
our communities while highlighting the power of design. For a list of
events—from free public walking tours of Waikiki and Downtown Honolulu
to Family Sunday at the Honolulu Museum and a free film night—please
visit aiahonolulu.org.
Meaty Topics
In this month’s issue, Building Industry tackles important
issues for Hawaii’s developers and builders: financing,
bonding and insurance, harbor and airport projects and an
“old” renewable building material:
• In her report on financing and bonding, Associate Editor Lee
Schaller probes the financial market on such major concerns
as how much money is available for development and construction, how restrained or liberal are lenders these days and
who has money to lend. The report delves into the risks that
bonding companies are facing and how those risks are also
affecting developers and builders. Page 16
• Hawaii’s “gateways”—airport and harbors—are the topic for an
update on construction projects and improvements. This sector
got a boost recently with the release of $113 million by the state
for capital improvement projects. Page 27
• Wood just might be our best “green” friend after all, and the
lumber and wood industry is predicting a steady build-up for
the construction business through 2013 toward a knockout year
in 2014. Think of wood as the ultimate green building material
because, as writer Priscilla Pérez Billig notes in her article, it
is the only naturally renewable construction resource that is
environmentally friendly. Page 35
And there’s more. Be sure to read the section on the
Subcontractors Association of Hawaii that looks into the
many sectors the SAH’s members represent and how they all
work together. Page 44
I hope you’ll make visiting Building Industry’s website part
of your routine. Along with the digital version of the magazine, buildingindustryhawaii.com has news updates on
what’s happening in the construction sector. There’s even a
link to a contest where you can enter for a chance to win a
free dinner for two.
Getting It Straight
In the March issue, an incorrect name was given for the
Hawaii Water Environment Association (HWEA) in coverage
of the winners of the photo contest it held for its members.
The HWEA is an organization of engineers, regulators,
operators and municipal workers who help protect our local
water resources. Building Industry regrets the error.
Aloha!
