Still Going Strong Confirmed last month by Guinness World Records, 92-year-old Gladys Burrill became the oldest women to finish a marathon when she completed the Honolulu Marathon in nine hours and 53 minutes on Dec. 12 last year. Nicknamed the “Gladyator,” she’s actually completed five marathons since she finished her first one in 2004 (at 85 years old). Wow! Her feat just proves that age really is just a number. And to some extent, the same can be said for our built environment. If the shell is still structurally sound, renovating the building or home is worth considering and will save the inherent embodied energy of the original structure. Read our annual feature on Renovation & Remodeling, starting on page 14, to see how the industry is helping to maintain many of Hawaii’s valuable assets. • AIA/GCA Committee Meeting. Late registration is $120 (based on availability). Students pay $60 (ID required at check-in). Contact Neil Yamamoto at nyamamoto@memberasse.org, or Joanna Clark at Joanna.Clark@Airgas.com. Stalwart Partners In recognition of a different kind of valuable asset, May is Military Appreciation Month. Read Lee Schaller’s Military Tribute to learn the myriad ways the military – whose presence in Hawaii dates as far back as 1860 – contributes to the health and vitality of our economy. It starts on page 26. And finally, two other features in this jam-packed May issue are: Environment & the Law (from page 36), also written by Lee Schaller, which looks at keeping Hawaii healthy from a different perspective; and Jason Soeda’s story on Windows, Skylights & Doors, beginning on page 44. Whether by letting the outside in or by keeping it out, these essential components contribute to “health” of individual buildings or homes. Happy reading!
