LEARNING THE CRAFT Industry Organizations Offer Quality Training and Recruiting Programs Aimed at a New Generation of Building Specialists BY DAVID PUTNAM D eciding to learn a trade likely will be the most important and financially rewarding choice you'll make. Learning a trade offers long-term job security because there's always another project needing the expertise of a skilled journeyman. In Hawaii, there are many training programs to consider: carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, equipment operating, roofing, drywall and flooring and tile installation, to name a few. And, to meet the demands of tomorrow's workforce, all of the trades are pressed to recruit and train waves of new skilled workers. The strategy, says Karen Nakamura, CEO of the Building Industry Association of Hawaii (BIA), is "recruiting workers who are motivated to learn a craft and who want to work in construction and take pride in their accomplishment." Some recruits, however, are hesitant about learning a craft, says Allan Los Banos Jr., director of training for Hawaii Masons and Plasterers, because they're "worried about getting dirty and working hard." 42 | BUILDING INDUSTRY | MAY 2014 Tile installation is among the many trades where training is readily available in Hawaii.
