July was no exception as awards of $16.4 million fell far short of last year’s $64.1 million. Meantime, the YTD total of $154,878,532 yields a faint 31 percent of last year’s $500.8 million total and is certainly cause for serious concern. Hope may be justified, however, as the DOE puts serious money into play with bids at 10 schools on Oahu, Kauai and Maui. The Big Island also expects a $5 million award from renovation work for the DPW Hilo while the Department of Finance in Maui has just advertised a 400 sheet request for construction of the new Kihei Police Station. Add the new bid opening this month on a $25 million munitions storage project and the gloom lifts somewhat. Still, California vintners should not count on large champagne orders from Hawaii contractors anytime soon.
