PV Installation Under Way on Hickam Homes Lend Lease and SolarCity has partnered to install 600 photovoltaic systems atop rooftops in Hickam communities. The project is expected to produce enough energy to power 2,000 military homes. Hickam Communities – owned and managed by Lend Lease, the preferred developer for the Air Force – is on its way to becoming one of the largest solar powered communities in Hawaii and the U.S through the installation of photovoltaic systems on 600 rooftops on base. The project is expected to create more than 55 green jobs in Hawaii during the two-year installation period, which began in May 2011 and is scheduled for completion in 2013. The targeted total of 4 megawatts is expected to produce more than 5.6 million kilowatt hours of electricity annually and help power more than 2,000 military family homes. That amount is enough to offset more than 260 million pounds of carbon dioxide over its lifetime, the equivalent of taking nearly 23,000 cars off the road for a year. The project will promote a cleaner environment in Hawaii and also help the Air Force meet Department of Defense goals to have 25 percent of its energy requirements met by renewable energy by 2025. Through a 20-year power purchase agreement, SolarCity will engineer, install and maintain the solar systems, which will be interconnected by Hawaiian Electric Co. “Entering into this power purchase agreement with support from Air Force leadership has given us an opportunity to give back to our families today and into the future,” says Jerry Schmitz, project director of Hickam Communities. “In addition to reducing emissions, money saved can go back into maintaining our community and providing services and programs for our families.” Announces the opening of its new, state of the art wood preserving plant in Rainier, Oregon The facility boasts five fully paved acres with a 25,000 square foot processing building and uses the latest computer innovations available from Osmose Wood Preserving.
