He’ll be back at the editor’s desk in the following weeks … For this issue, we visited Kauai to see how the picture has changed since last year at this time. Building Industry has been visiting Kauai for our annual report of the island’s construction industry for more than a decade. But this year we sent a new face—David. Not only was he new to the story, it was his first trip to Kauai. He even bought new hard-toed shoes for the occasion. We’d like to thank everyone on the Garden Isle— county, private and association contacts—who granted interviews, took him on tours and provided information. Turn to page 10 to see how Kauai is faring in this economy. Is Kauai on the rebound? How are less conventional industries, such as seed research and biomass energy, affecting the island’s business climate? On another island—Guam—our local reporter Mar-Vic Cagurangan shares how impossible it is to travel around the island without seeing evidence of the Guam Transportation Plan 2030. With large cranes hovering overhead, the territory works to enhance the capacity of the island’s bridges and roads to accommodate the projected population growth anticipated due to the relocation of Marines from Okinawa to Guam. Story, page 38. Back on Oahu, associate editor Lee Schaller discusses with Hawaii’s union leaders their views on the more upbeat economic picture and what it means to their members and to the industry as whole. Also covered in detail are priorities and goals, as well as current concerns and challenges, some of which may surprise you. Story, page 22. Enjoy the read!
