PatchMaster Lowers Cost of Asphalt To better meet Hawaii’s need for a quality and affordable asphalt, SealMaster Hawaii is manufacturing PatchMaster, a high-performance pothole mix, on Oahu. “We use Hawaiian cement, 3/8 grade A rock. The oil percent and mix design are proprietary,” says John Moody, vice president of Walker-Moody Asphalt Maintenance Ltd. and SealMaster Hawaii. Moody says the oil is warmed in a heated tank and mixed with a local basaltic rock that won’t turn white after it cures. The base asphalt is supplied by Hawaii Cement, and special additives are included in the final mix. The material is bagged by SealMaster and is available in 50-pound weather-proof bags, 400/1,100-pound bulk bags or in bulk (1-ton minimum). “The product qualifies for Hawaii product preference, and we have filed paperwork that is being processed now. That is PatchMaster,” Moody says. “Because no one made a quality mix on the Islands, it was always shipped from the Mainland. … We saw that no one was producing this high-end product so we had a plant designed to manufacture it and have reduced bag price by 40 percent,” he says. Since PatchMaster is designed for Hawaii, it will work in wet weather and can be installed in dry or wet potholes, he adds. MANAGEMENT.
