DPP Wins Innovation Award for Online ePlans
The City and County of Honolulu
Department of Planning and
Permitting (DPP) received the 2013
Computronix Customer Innovation
Award in the "Best Use of Technology"
category for the implementation of its
"ePlans" online permitting system on
September 18 in Edmonton, Canada.
DPP provides services and information
on building permits, development
projects and planning activities for
the City and County of Honolulu.
Ken Schmidt, DPP's GIS administrator,
accepted the award.
"We are honored to be selected for
this award and to be recognized for
the City's commitment to improving
service to the people of Honolulu
through the use of technology," said
DPP Director George Atta.
The award recognizes DPP for
using complementary software to
expand Computronix's POSSE permittracking system. In July 2012, the DPP
implemented the online application
"ePlans," which provides a seamless
integration between POSSE and Avolve
Software Corporation's "ProjectDox"
electronic plans review program.
The ePlans system eliminates the
practice of going to DPP's permit
counter to submit building plans
because applicants now are able to
file plans online. The system also

eliminates the need to provide multiple sets of plans, and reduces the
cost of producing and storing large
rolls of paper.
"DPP's ePlans system has further
streamlined the planning process in
Honolulu, simplifying the application
and review process for applicants
and planning staff alike, eliminating
wasteful and expensive paper-based
processes and requirements, and
adding to the City and County's significant online digital footprint," said
Jim den Otter, Computronix chief
technology officer.
